Amazing and Best Contemporary Living Room Design Ideas

contemporary living room design ideas

Home is where the heart is, so the saying goes. Home is also somewhere where we spend a great deal of our free time and it makes sense that we should make the best use of the available space. The living room is the main room that most of us focus on when decorating as this is the room where we tend to wind down and relax. Gone are the days of a ‘fussy' living space and today's contemporary living rooms are lighter, less cluttered and use attractive features such as metal curtain poles to give the room its special character.

To create a contemporary living space, first of all, we need to look at the colour scheme. Colourful wallpapers are definitely out and plain white walls or variations thereof, are the order of the day. White walls, in effect, create a blank canvas from which to work and also help to emphasise other objects in the room such as decorative sculptures. Of course, if you have young children, you may need to take this into consideration and avoid pure white, opting instead for plain pastel shades.

To avoid clutter, a table can also double as storage in order to keep magazines and other items off the floor and stored neatly away. Curtains should be light to allow the sun to stream into the room as this will help to give it a warmer feel. Metal curtain poles will add some contrast against the thinner curtains and add a nice contemporary touch.

The key to contemporary living is really to take a minimalist approach and leave as much space as possible. This doesn't mean, however, that you can't have ornaments and other decorations. Shelving can be attached to the wall, leaving you with plenty of floor space but allowing you to display photographs etc.

Artwork also helps to bring warmth and colour to a plain room and there are many modern art prints available now, which, if framed nicely can add to the beauty of a room as well as providing a focal point.

Having a large colourful plant will also warm up the room as a bare white room can sometimes feel a little stark. If selected correctly, the right plant will enhance a room and may even provide an attractive aroma too.

If your living room is not situated to take advantage of natural sunlight, then it is important that you ensure that it is well lit. Of course, there will be occasions when you will want more subdued lighting so having dimmer switches fitted is a good idea. Do try to match your light fittings though and, if possible, choose the material to match the metal curtain poles in the room.

Decorating the room does not need to be expensive and, chosen wisely, good quality products can be found that will fulfil the basic requirements of contemporary living room design. Additional extras such as artwork, ornaments and fittings can be added gradually to provide the final look.
